Experiments
An experiment runs two published versions of one agent side by side:
- Control (A): what callers get today, the live version
- Test (B): the change you want to try
Every call during the experiment lands in one group or the other, and only those calls are compared. Calls before or after the experiment, and calls to other agents, are not counted.
Experiments are available for Cascaded voice pipeline agents. An agent runs one experiment at a time.
Set one up
Open the agent’s Experiments section in the builder and click New experiment.
Click Start experiment, or Schedule experiment when it starts later.
Publish the current draft as B… publishes the draft as a new version without making it live: callers keep getting the live version, and the new version takes calls only as the test group once the experiment starts.
How calls are split
Each call is assigned to A or B when it arrives, at the share you set. The assignment is made per call, so the same caller can land in different groups on different calls.
- Inbound agents: every routed number uses the same share.
- Outbound agents: Studio picks the group for each call, or you choose it yourself by adding
"experiment_group": "A"or"B"to the call’senv_vars. See Place calls from an outbound agent.
Every call in an experiment is stamped with the experiment and its group. You can see the group in Calls, and it is in the result webhook payload.
What is measured
Results are counted per live conversation unless the measure says otherwise: a call that was answered, not by a machine, and had at least one turn. Unanswered calls and voicemail don’t dilute either group.
All are selected by default except Minutes per answered call. Answering machine detection shares is offered only for outbound agents.
Read the results
While the experiment runs, the Experiments section shows:
- the split, and how many calls each group answered
- a table with each measure for Control and Test, and the Difference (B minus A), in points for percentages. A difference is green when B is better and red when it is worse, for measures that have a better direction.
- how many live conversations each group has, with a note on how far to trust the difference: under 300 per group is a lean, not a verdict; around 500 per group has been enough to call a 7-point change
- See these calls →, which opens Calls filtered to the experiment
In Calls, choosing the experiment from the filter shows the same comparison above the list, and the A Control and B Test buttons list one group’s calls.
Stop or promote
- Stop ends the experiment. All calls go back to the control group (A). The results so far are kept.
- Promote test makes the test version (B) what every caller gets, and ends the experiment.
- A scheduled experiment has Cancel experiment instead of Stop.
An experiment with an end set stops by itself when it reaches it. Nothing is promoted automatically; you decide.
When an experiment ends, its results are frozen and it moves to Past experiments, marked Test promoted, Control kept or Stopped.
Publishing while an experiment runs
- Publishing a new version while an experiment runs does not change the experiment. The new version takes calls once you stop it, and the test group can no longer be promoted.
- Publishing or rolling back while an experiment is scheduled cancels it.
- Versions taking calls in a running experiment can’t be deleted.
